Ming-Chi Kuo: Upcoming iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will gain 5MP front camera upgrades

No matter how nice the photos it takes, the iPhone’s aging 8MP rear / 1.2MP front camera setup is eligible for an upgrade at this point, and Apple appears to have a clue. We’ve already heard substantial rumors about an upgrade to a 12MP rear camera in the upcoming iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, in addition to long-expected 4K video recording ability. But today, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, famous for his accurate guesswork on upcoming Apple stuff, added a new detail to the picture — a new 5MP front cam will succeed the 1.2MP selfie snapper.

Kuo’s note to investors also claims that the iPhone 6s (and, presumably, the iPhone 6s Plus) will come in 16GB ($299), 64GB ($399) and 128GB ($499) storage variants, which is identical to the current iPhone line-up’s storage and pricing scheme. Moreover, Kuo confirms the presence of Force Touch display, a new rose gold casing color (not made of actual gold), and an upgrade to the Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Previously, the analyst explained Force Touch as able to enhance the user experience with more input methods and support of handwritten signatures, which would be beneficial for expanding in the commercial market. He also said that the rose gold color matches that of the Apple Watch Edition, while the recognition rate of Touch ID will be improved further in a bid to promote Apple Pay. The smartphones will also get new Apple A9 chipsets and an additional gigabyte of RAM memory.

Apple will reveal its new iPhones and whatever else it may or may not have to show on September 9, next Wednesday. Mass production of the new iPhones has allegedly begun, with total shipments for 2015 numbered at above 80 million devices, with a 2:1 ratio between the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models. It looks like people’s love for phablets still hasn’t caught up to their preferences for a regular-sized phone.
