Remember Foundbite? The Windows Phone application and cloud service that allowed you to ‘peek’ at sound environments from around the world? We reviewed it here back in the day. Well, the idea’s not dead and in fact the application has had a complete redesign, plus it now has an investor in IdeaLab, plus there’s an Android version coming on-stream. Here’s what’s new for Windows Phone users, including Pinpoint, a game based on the concept.

Here’s the changelog for Foundbite since our previous look at the application, back when we reviewed it 18 months ago:

• Find friends using Twitter and Facebook.
• Facebook Login now supported.
• Interface has been completely redesigned.
• Integration with Pinpoint (our Foundbite game).
• View a top random foundbite.
• Comment on a foundbite
• Ability to “map” a foundbite, which basically saves it to a personalised map of the world that has all your favourite foundbites on it.

A good set of improvements, though I still don’t see much action around this concept across the mobile industry. Let’s hope that it does take off.

In the meantime, here’s the new version of Foundbite and its related game in action:

Logging in with Facebook is now straightforward… (right) the facelifted UI. Soundbites, sorry, Foundbites play automatically as each image is brought into view – it’s very slick and atmospheric.

Ah yes, the ambience of the mountainside…. Tapping through, you can see what other foundbites the user has uploaded, of course; (right) browsing through foundbites around the world around my current location – what shall we listen to today, etc?

Two more typical foundbites – if only there were more online… 

Also included is this neat little free game, Pinpoint – you’re shown and played (i.e. audio) foundbites from round the world and you then have to guess where they were captured on a map…

Your guesses and their errors in KM are then added up, inverted, and a final score created – I think I did pretty well here, see how you do!
