Patents have always been awarded to company that could afford to pay for them. Its one of the critical revenue source for any government.

Google from a company that don’t believe in patent to one that manage to amass thousands of it.

Smaller company would have perish from such patent assault. The day Microsoft put forth their own branded Android device is now on the table. Microsoft could co-develop Android with Google since Android is an open platform.

Like open standard such as the Internet, every one could contribute to it.
