Windowsphone.com is dead, long live Microsoft.com!

We’ve known this was coming for ages, with more and more content siphoned off windowsphone.com and onto microsoft.com – the idea being that ‘Windows Phone’ as a term is being deprecated in favour of the new Windows 10 Mobile, the variant of the universal OS that will run on (most of) our existing Windows Phones. And today windowsphone.com is no more, it now redirects to the appropriate landing page for Windows 10 Mobile and its devices and ecosystem, on the microsoft.com server. The queen is dead, long live the king? Or something like that!

Head over to windowsphone.com now and you’ll get redirected to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/phones, which will look like:

Windows 10 Mobile

With a slightly revisionist hat on, the bottom link refers to your ‘Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Phone’, when these were obviously ‘Windows Phone 7’, ‘Windows Phone 8’, and so on. But in the overall scheme of things, this is semantics and you can forgive Microsoft a little rebranding here and there in the effort to make sure everyone ‘gets’ the continuity in heritage, even if the finer details of binaries and runtimes threaten to muddy these waters if you delve too deeply.

You don’t have to worry about memorising a new URL since Microsoft will keep the redirect going for several years at least.
