Is there an Apple iRing in the future?

A patent application originally filed this past April Fool’s Day by Apple, was released yesterday by the USPTO. The application hints that someday we could be hearing about another wearable device from Cupertino, the Apple iRing. The patent application shows off a touchscreen device that would fit on your finger. The ring would have a built-in microphone to allow you to communicate with Siri, and be equipped with a rechargeable battery.

The ring could also be used as a wireless controller for games, and remotely activate a camera’s shutter. It also would be able to wirelessly move a cursor around a computer screen. Despite the size of the device, Apple envisions putting a fingerprint scanner on the ring in order for it to work with mobile payment service Apple Pay. Another variation of the ring mentioned in the filing, includes a camera. The actual name of Apple’s patent application is “Devices and Methods for a Ring Computing Device.”

Since the application is not for a design patent, any such device might not look exactly like the images in the application. Keep in mind that a start-up company called Ringly already offers smart jewelry, including a ring, that vibrates and flashes colors to notify the wearer of a incoming phone call or text message on a paired smartphone.
