New ZTE handset certified by TENAA lacks a camera

Some BlackBerry handsets have been offered by the manufacturer without a camera, in order to protect businesses that purchased them for employees. But ZTE isn’t known for selling to the enterprise like BlackBerry is, making the new ZTE S3003 seem a bit odd. The handset has been certified by Chinese regulator TENAA, and there is no camera on the back or on the front of the phone.

This could have been done by ZTE in order to bring the pricing down, but how much more would a camera module add to the cost of an entry-level handset? The difference could be about $10. Since the start of the selfie craze, it is hard to find someone who has never used the camera on their phone. Besides, having a smartphone with a camera can come in handy even if you don’t normally take many photos.

The ZTE S3003 features a 5-inch display with a 720 x 1280 resolution. That works out to a pixel density of 294ppi. A quad-core 1.5GHz CPU is inside, along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory. The handset isn’t too thick, measuring a trim 7.4mm thin, and weighs only 117g. The handset supports TD-LTE connectivity. We don’t expect to see this model touch down in the states.
